Jesus’ Teaching-The farmer sows seeds: Is my heart soft towards Jesus?

Introducing the big idea (3 Minutes)

Have the kids split into two groups

Say, “Today, we are going to hear a story that Jesus taught about seeds and plants. So to get us warmed up, want this half of the room to think of GOOD things that seeds need to grow into plants, and this half of the room to think of BAD things that stop seeds from growing…”

  • Let the kids discuss for a few moments
  • Gather their attention

Say, “Ok, This side, put up your hand if you remember something your group said that helps seeds grow” Water, dirt, sunshine…

Say, “Ok, Now this side. Put up your hand if you remember something that can stop plants from growing” Bad dirt, weeds, people stepping on them…

Say, “Great answers. Let’s hear what Jesus teaches about seeds by reading from our Bible!”

Now, let’s see what that story could look like! Here it is again, and pay special attention because you’re going to need to help me later when we re-tell the story!

Heart to Heart (5 Minutes)

* Items needed: 2 colors of prepared hearts with matched answers & tape, garbage can

Say, “Now Jesus wasn’t just teaching us how to grow a good garden, he was actually teaching us about how we can keep our hearts good to learn about Him, and then live the way that He wants us to!”

“on this side are the types of soil Jesus talked about, and on this side is what that means our heart is like. Let’s try and match them up!!

  • Tape each group of hearts up on opposite sides of the room
  • The matching hearts have the gardening reference on one, and the heart condition on the other.
  • Have the kids pick out one heart with the gardening reference, and then try and point out the matching one!

Say, “Now that we have them matched up, let’s look at which ones are good, and which ones are bad, and which ones we should try and live by…”

–       Seeds that fall on a path and get eaten by birds are like people who hear God’s word and don’t even think about it or remember it. Should we be like that? No, trash the heart!

–       Seeds that grow in rocky places are like people who obey God for a little while and then give up when bad things happen to them. Should we be like that? No, trash the heart!

–       Seeds that grow with lots of weeds around them are like people who let people, activities and their toys take up too much of their time until they have no time to spend going to church, praying or singing to God. Should we be like that? No, trash the heart!

–       Seeds that grow in good soil are like people who live good lives and put their friendship with Jesus first and try and live like Him! Should we be like that? Yes, keep the heart!!


Bible Story- Act it Out (5-8 Minutes)

* Items needed: Bible story (included)

Say, “Ok everyone, it’s time to act out our story, and we need partners to do this, so everyone team up!” Help the kids all find a partner

Alright, I need one person of each pair to put up their hand. Good. You are going to start by being the “SEEDS” and your partners are going to be whatever helps or stops the seeds from growing, like being sun or birds…It’s up to you to act it out! Let’s read our story again!!

“…(Jesus) said “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and stopped the plants from growing, so that they did not bear grain.

Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.” (have fun seeing how the kids will be good soil!)

Say, “Great job, now let’s read the meaning of the story, and switch roles. This time the partner who was helping or stopping is going to be a person who is reading “THE WORD” (which means the Bible) and the person who was the “seed” is going to either help or stop the “WORD”. Let’s keep reading…”

Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they read it, Satan comes and takes away [the words that they just read, and they don’t even really remember it at all]

Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. [and behave badly again]

Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, [the busyness and all of their things that they own distract and stop the word, making it unfruitful. and they never practice what they learned]

Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.”[They learn from the bible and live like Jesus and don’t let anything stop them!]

Say. “great job everyone, you can all take a seat!”

*Verse 8 & 19’s words have been changed to not include the word “choke”. The parable’s wording has been elaborated upon a little for the acting/clarity

Memory Verse (2-3 Minutes)

* Items needed: Bible flash cards x 2

  • Divide the kids into two groups
  • Have the kids help you sort the hearts from smallest to biggest to get them in the right order for the bible verse. Read each word as you go, and then read through the verse a few times with the children.

Where’s your heart at? (5-8 Minutes)

  • Construction paper, heart, heading “Heart Check”, glue, scissors, brad, heart pointer pieces, crayons

Just as a farmer has to make sure his ground and fields are good for his seeds, we need to make sure that our hearts are good to hear and remember what Jesus wants to teach us. Let’s make a heart checker right now!

  • First, have the kids cut out the big heart and glue it onto the construction paper.
  • Then hand out a heart pointer to each child.
  • Help them poke a hole in the heart pointer and heart picture.
  • Join them together with the brad, so the pointer can move around like a clock hand.
  • Color the picture drawing in what’s missing
  • Point the heart pointer to where your heart is right now!

Snack & Blessing (1 Minute)

  • Items needed: Cookies (Nut free, with a few sesame seeds on top)

Pray for the kids:

“I pray this blessing over each one of you.

Each of you is precious in God’s sight.

God sees you every minute of every day and he loves you.

I pray that you will come to know and love Jesus with all your heart for all your days.

May the Lord bless you and protect you.

May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.

May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.

Amen.”

Give the kids a cookie.

Clean Up!

Since our building is used for many different things, we need to make sure we clean up after ourselves. You can definitely have the kids help you do this near the end of the morning!!

  • Please use the BAG provided to put all the left-over items into it, and then you can leave your bag in the classroom.
  • Please pick up all the garbage and put it in the trash
  • If there are chairs or stools, please fold or stack them and put them away
  • Please turn the heat down (applicable for youth room and Gazebo) to 10 degrees
  • Please make sure any TVs/DVDs/Projectors are powered off
  • Please make sure all toys are put away
