Prepared by: Teresa Klassen

1.         Opener: The Great Adventure (10-15 minutes)

Materials needed:

  • Painter’s tape
  • Signs with descriptions
  • Clipboard, pen and paper for helpers

Instructions:

  • Depending on the size of your group, mark off one or more curvy paths with painter’s tape on the floor…you can do as a solid or dotted lines with the occasional arrow to keep moving them along.
  • Along the way have 4 DANGER SIGNS as described below.
  • Give each leader a clip-board and pen so that they can write down the kids answers (for older grades, just have one of the students be the leader of the group)

Teacher says: All right everyone, we are going to start off our morning by going on an adventure. You will see that I have two routes marked off for us to follow and arrows where to go…but every once and a while you will see a spot marked DANGER.  When you come to a spot marked DANGER you need to read what it says and talk with each other about what you would do.  Your leader will write down your answers.

DANGER SIGN 1:

Oh no! There is a runaway camel coming towards you putting your whole camp in danger.  You don’t want to hurt the camel because a camel could be very helpful in carrying all your stuff on this adventure. You need some instructions but you don’t have any. What will you do?

DANGER SIGN 2: (at this point, make waves with the tape on the floor so it looks like you are in water)

Oh No!  You need to cross a river but there are piranhas with very sharp teeth in the river. You have to get to the other side. You need some instructions but you don’t have any. What will you do?

DANGER SIGN 3:

Oh no! You caught lobsters for everyone in your group to eat for dinner but the lobsters escaped in the camp kitchen. You need some instructions but you don’t have any. How will you catch them without getting your fingers pinched off?

DANGER SIGN 4:

Oh no! It is night-time and you are near the end of your journey. You have found the cabin where you will sleep for the night but the door is locked solid and the windows are too high to climb through.  You will need to break through the door but how? You need some instructions but you don’t have any. What will you do?

When they come to the end of the journey…there is a paper that says “congratulations, you made it through the adventure and now you will get your reward. X marks the spot and the way you get there is, first you have to….” With the rest of the words smudged out or unreadable.

The Teacher and Helpers are at the end of this pathway ready to answer questions. When the kids say, “We can’t read it” or “it doesn’t tell us where our reward is” you can pick up from there.

Teacher: There really is a reward but it is going to be impossible to find without the right instructions.  I am going to give you those instructions, but first I want to talk about those  Danger signs (have the groups stay together and sit down).

2.         We Need Real Instructions (5-8 minutes)

Now, you guessed at some of the things you could do for each of those Danger signs, but did you know that there are actually RIGHT answers for those dangerous situations?  There is a book that gives you the real instructions on what to do about each one of those things!! The book is called The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook.

1.            What was an idea you had about stopping the runaway camel? – I am going to listen to 2 answers…

Here are the real instructions of what to do: If you can grab the camels reigns. You can’t pull the reigns or you will break the camel’s nose. So pull the reigns in which ever way the camel turns his head and he will begin to run in circles. It will soon grow tired, give up, and sit down and then you can jump off.

2.            What would you have done if you had to cross a river that had piranhas in it? – I am going to listen to 2 answers…

Here are the real instructions of what to do: there are some different things you should be aware of when it comes to dangerous fishes like piranhas, but one thing that has a good chance of working is crossing the river at night. Most piranhas sleep at night and swim away if disturbed. So walk quietly through the river, at night and you will have a better chance of making it across.

3.            What would you do if all your lobsters got loose in the kitchen? – I am going to listen to 2 answers…

Here are the real instructions of what to do: Best thing to do is to wear oven mitts so that your hands are protected. Then grab them and put them in a pot with water in it and put on the lid!

4.            Remember the locked door? What would you do if you came to your cabin at night and the door was locked? How would you get through the door? – I am going to listen to 2 answers…

Here are the real instructions of what to do: Best thing to do is NOT to try to break it down by running against it and hitting it with your shoulder. The best way is to use your foot and kick right near the door knob and lock, if you hit it there you will break the lock and you will be able to get in!

3.         Now the Reward! (5-8 minutes)

Materials needed: A sheet with bad instructions and a sheet with good instructions. These are folded so the kids don’t know which ones they are getting.

Teacher says: Now, what about the reward? You came to the end and what did you find? (let the kids answer). The instructions were torn away or were unclear. The only way you would find that reward without the instructions is if you took hours and hours to look through everything in this whole building. That’s why good instructions are so important.

There are good instructions and bad instructions.

So, now I am going to give you the instructions to find your reward. I am going to time you by counting to 20 to see if you can find the reward before I get to 20.

Keep the children in their original groups and then give the instructions out. One group will have the real instructions and it will lead them directly to the reward (determine what the reward should be and then wrap it up nicely and place it in the spot your good instructions lead to). The instructions should lead the kids directly there, with no chasing around so that they can do it in the time-frame of your counting. The other bad instructions will be all confusing…

The Good Instructions should also say bring the reward back to the teacher and he/she will share it with the whole group.

4.         God’s Good Instructions Game (10 minutes)

Teacher says: Some of you had good instructions and the rest had bad ones.  What happened when you got bad instructions? (let the kids answer). What happened when you had good instructions? (let the kids answer). When we have the right instructions, we know EXACTLY WHAT TO DO EVERY TIME!

Did you know that every day we are hearing GOOD INSTRUCTIONS and BAD INSTRUCTIONS and we need to make a decision about which ones we will obey.  Good instructions lead us to live a good life.  Bad instructions are confusing and can mix us up and lead us to do all kinds of things that will hurt us.

God has given us the Bible and it is full of GOOD INSTRUCTIONS. Just like our good instructions led us to a delicious reward, God’s instructions also lead us to live His way. That is why God’s Words that we find in the Bible are better than any treasure!

Now, I am going to need you to decide what is an instruction that is found in the Bible, and what is an instruction that is NOT found in the Bible. To do this we will play a game.

  • Have everyone line up at one end of the classroom

Teacher concludes: God’s instructions from the Bible are always good for us! God’s instructions from the Bible take us to the places that are good for us. God’s words are so wise. They are a treasure. In fact. Listen to this verse from the Bible

5.         God’s Words Are A Treasure (3 minutes)

Ahead of time print these words in a larger font and put them in a bible and then sprinkle silver glitter over them so that it is loose in the Bible. When you go to read it, carefully open it up and hold the Bible as if it is precious. * I have changed the language a bit to be understood by this age-group

1. The first time you read it, just read it (you will have to read the words through the glitter)

Proverbs 3:13-17 You are happy when listen to God’s wise words. God’s wise words are better than silver and better than gold!  It is more precious than any treasure!

That means that God’s words are so good, so wonderful that they are more precious than silver even! Let me read that again and listen carefully…

2. The second time you read it then pause at the word “silver and gold” and just gently blow the glitter so that it blows over their heads and falls like rain…(have a little extra on hand in case you need some)

Proverbs 3:13-17 You are happy when listen to God’s wise words. God’s wise words are better than silver and better than gold….

Children, as you are learning how to read, you will want to read your Bible because Jesus is wanting to give you very good, wonderful, precious instructions to show you how to live a good life and to love God. God’s words are more precious than silver and gold!

6.         Bible verse sheet for this month – coloring activity

The sheet will say “Parents, today we talked about how God’s Instructions are more precious than silver or gold or any treasure!  This is our memory verse for May” and the word instructions will be an outlined word that the children can decorate however they like with glitter and sequins and anything else that looks treasure-like…

Psalm 119:33: “Teach me, O Lord, to follow your instructions; then I will keep them to the end.”

7.         Prayer and Free-Time

Take the time to pray with the children and over them.

If the weather is nice, let them enjoy the yard (please make sure you have someone supervising) but make sure they clean up before they leave the yard. If children are inside as well you will need someone inside and outside.

Clean Up!

Since our building is used for many different things, we need to make sure we clean up after ourselves. You can definitely have the kids help you do this near the end of the morning!!

  • Please use the BAG provided to put all the left-over items into it, and then you can leave your bag in the classroom.
  • Please pick up all the garbage and put it in the trash
  • If there are chairs or stools, please fold or stack them and put them away
  • Please turn the heat down (applicable for youth room and Gazebo) to 10 degrees
  • Please make sure any TVs/DVDs/Projectors are powered off
  • Please make sure all toys are put away

Thank you so very much!
