Simple Sunday Christmas Party

This is a plan for a very simple Christmas Party the Sunday before Christmas Eve. In our church we hold a service on Christmas Eve, and we do not have a gathering on the Sunday following Christmas Eve as we encourage people to stay home, be with family and friends and neighbors.

PARTY PLAN

1. Start by welcoming the kids (3 minutes)

Teacher says: I wonder how well you know the Christmas Story? We are going to break off into a few teams (make sure there are no more than 10 children in a team. Less is better, so have your leaders lead smaller teams). Whoever gets the most answers right in the time I give you will get the FIRST PRIZE — but everyone will get a little prize. Some treats you can have when you are ready to leave later.

  • Have everyone break off into groups with a leader in each group and then work through the Christmas Quiz (attached). Time them for about 8 minutes. If that is too short, then give them a little extra time, but not too much more!
  • Mix the kids up so there are older and younger kids in one group. Some of the questions are really easy, and some are tough.
  • Leaders — don’t help the kids…don’t give hints…if they don’t know the answer, have them make a wild guess!!
  • PLEASE WRITE DOWN ALL THEIR ANSWERS AND GIVE TERESA THE SHEETS AT THE END — WRITE DOWN AS MANY ANSWERS AS YOU CAN, INCLUDING THE FUNNY ONES. (I made a little display of the answers for our kids website)

First prize: suckers you can give the winning team at the end
Second prize: everyone gets one of the wrapped candy slices

3. Tell the Christmas Story (using flashcards provided) (10-12 minutes)

You can make your own flashcards, or you can get permission from the author of the bricktestament.com and print off some of his fun lego pictures (look under New Testament, Life of Jesus…you will have to choose ones that you feel are suitable. Not all the pictures always represent the best view of our faith, but most of it is very helpful)
4. Make the Christmas Craft (10-15 minutes)

It is a little Christmas decoration they can decorate. Make sure you use the scrap paper to set the decoration on and write their name on the scrap paper, set aside on the shelf.

I wrapped blocks I found at the Dollar Store in brown paper, and hot-glued a little red ribbon loop on top and then provided lots of messy glitter and stickers and felts for the children to use to decorate these.

5. Play a fun little game to get the wiggles out (5-10 minutes)

  • This is a relay race. Divide the kids in two or three teams
  • Smear some Vaseline on the ends of their noses (I know, they will think it is gross…that’s the fun of it!)
  • Then explain that they have to stick a cotton ball (a snowball) on the end of their nose and run to the other end, take the ball off and put it in the paper bag. The first team to use up all their cotton balls, wins! (no prize for this one though). If you want to make this more difficult (if the children are older) you can tell them they can’t use their hands to get the “snowball” off!!
  • There will be some kleenex that they can wipe their noses off later

6. Now the kids can settle down and you can play the Christmas movie (35 minutes)

Provide some pop-corn twist snacks and some juice.

We used the DVD from the Read & Share DVD series; the Christmas movie. It is very well done and very accurate.

A Very Simple Christmas Sketch

Family Pictures – Christmas 2010

(A Little Christmas Sketch For Little People)

  • This is a VERY simple Christmas Feature to include children as a part of a Christmas Service.
  • You can expand the cast, but this one only needs around a dozen children and an adult (or teen) narrator.
  • There are NO lines to memorize
  • You can even simplify what I have here but this is what you will need for the play

YOU WILL NEED:

1.     Photos that you take a few Sundays before the event of children posing for the powerpoint photos near the front end of the play (I will try to post some so you get an idea how we did ours).

2.     A Polaroid frame you can use for the “live” photos – we made a frame with some light inexpensive wood and then stapled cardboard to it, that we painted white

3.     Some simple props made out of cardboard that you can paint

4.     A keyboardist and some simple sounds recorded on an iPhone or CD or…

THE “SKETCH”

Narrator’s Introduction: This year we did what we have done so many times before, we took a family picture. It seems like such a simple thing to do, but it is ridiculously difficult. This year I gave everyone fair warning: at 1:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon you better all be good looking because we are taking a family picture.  Monday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. it was pouring rain.  But I didn’t give up. We waited that rain out and when it was down to a drizzle we snapped as many photos as we could and…well…with a little photo-shopping, it is what it is. (You can show some blooper shots of failed family pictures shot and then your final family shot if you like).

Why do we want to capture things in photographs? I guess we want to hold onto those moments, to remember, to reflect…

I wonder…as Jesus looks back at all the time that has gone by, from the beginning of the world until now, what are His standout moments?  If He were to pull out the Polaroid’s, which ones would make him smile?

* Photos on powerpoint that look like Polaroids with kids reinacting scene…you can use children of any age. Just have them pose and then photoshop to add to the scene, child-like drawings to create the photo. See our sample.

(Photo One) Adam and Eve – in the beginning of course (Adam and Eve, big grins) when everything was perfect and new and full of possibility.

(Photo two) – Some photos aren’t as great as others. But the reality is…this was a pretty big moment in human history; one really bad decision (picture of Eve considering the snake up in the tree)

(Photo Three) – Every photo album has its crazy photos. Can you imagine the ark…close quarters for months on end…it was pretty…”wild” (we had children pose and then we drew in animal attributes, drew in an ark etc)

(Photo four) People seeing the rainbow for the first time…now that was a moment for God to show off his artwork wasn’t it? (child looking up at a rainbow that you draw in)

(Photo five) Joseph and his fabulous colorful coat. The story of Joseph was one of those suspense stories where you think things will never turn out…and then they do! (Child arms out, thumbs up…showing off the amazing coat you draw in)

(Photo six) Moses and the burning bush? He was just walking along on an ordinary day and then God capture this scene with the burning bush(child kneeling, warming hands…draw in burning bush)

(Photo seven) David & Goliath. This one definitely would be in the album…remember David yelling, “You come at me with sword and spear, but I come at you with the power of God!!” Yeah, that is definitely a keeper. (we used a preschooler and a really tall young man, in the shot you only see legs and then the little kid sitting on the floor with a drawn in slingshot and bag of rocks)

(Photo eight) Those first glimpses of the promised land? You know when you have waited and waited for something and then you see it. Who wouldn’t snap a picture? (group of kids, excited, hands to eyes as if searching…and a picture of milk and a picture of honey)

(Photo nine) Jonah and the whale? Wait for it….wait for it…God sets up the perfect shot and there it is…Jonah thinks he is a goner and then God does what only God can do. (Child puffing out cheeks and holding nose…draw in bubbles and a huge fish lurking behind him)

Polaroid frame is moved onto the stage. Scenes are formed behind this frame….as “frozen shots”

Jesus could have loads and loads of photos to scrapbook but I am thinking one of his favorite pages would have to be the Christmas one…because it would be the first time people would meet Him face to face.

  • We used gentle keyboard music behind the sketch from this point on, just to mask “dead spots”. When the actual scene would freeze, we would switch to music, or to a recorded sound that fit the particular scene.
  • We used a bell on stage to indicate the end of a scene…narrator did this.

“Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you! You have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High…

Narrator slows: …his Kingdom will never end!” (“ding!”)

(Scene change: Mary Stands, moves forward, and turns around…Stage hand 1 puts flashlight behind curtain and carries ladder down. Stage hand 1 moves to right side of stage near curtain ready for his next prop. Stage hand 3 is standing there too. Joseph enters…Stage hand 2 grabs the “what”)

Props:

  • Voice balloon: “What?!?”

Narrator:                                    This frightened and confused Mary, she was engaged to be married to Joseph.

Here we see Mary telling Joseph the news  that she would be having a son and that he would be called the Son of God. Can you imagine?

Narrator slows: God couldn’t have picked a more unusual way to have                                                             His Son come into the world. (“ding!”)

(Scene change: Mary moves behind curtain and takes voice balloon with her)

So he appeared to Him in a dream and said, “It’s all good Joseph. This is my idea. (Joseph smiles in his sleep)

Narrator slows: The baby will grow up and save people from all their                                                             sins.”  (“ding!”)

(Scene change: Stage hand 2 steps back, taking props with her and putting behind screen. Stage hand 1 moves to right. Stage hand 3 moves off stage to help Picketer 1 and Picketer 2 move into the frame Stage hand 2 stays where she is just to help Picketer 1 and Picketer 2. Stage hand 3 helps the boys stand still but stays out of the frame)

  • Picket signs (our signs said, “No H.S.T.” which was a controversial tax in British Columbia at the time this was written), kept by the chairs. Kelsey will help boys get ready

Narrator:                                    There are more photographs to look at. Mary is now  pregnant and something happens. The Government in  that time declared that all the world should be taxed

Narrator slows: This meant Joseph had to pack up and head to his home                                                             town in Bethlehem. (“ding!”)

(Stage hand 3 moves boys off stage and back to their seats)

So that’s where he and Mary went.

Narrator:                                    When they arrived in Bethlehem the city was busy.   There were people everywhere. Joseph and Mary went  to Inn after Inn and could not find a place to sleep.    Finally, one of the Innkeeper’s offered an unusual solution…they could sleep in the Stable he had   out back.

(Stage hand Stage hand 2 quickly changes sign to: Bethlehem Stable: Sleep with the sheep. Thought Bubble goes away. Mary and Joseph stay in their pose. Stage hand 1 grabs the manger prop and sets it in place where Innkeeper was standing. Innkeeper leaves the stage)

Narrator slows: It was warm-ish and there was lots of hay they could                                                             sleep on, so that is where they went (“ding!”)

No big announcements. No fanfare. Just a quiet moment that would profoundly change all of human history.

Narrator:                                    God couldn’t contain his excitement so he found some    people – not kings or queens or prime ministers or  business owners or dignitaries –

Narrator slows: blue collar shepherds working in the fields with their                                                             sheep (“ding!”)

“Don’t be afraid. We are bringing good news to you that will soon mean great joy for every person on earth. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem. You will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.

Narrator:                                    Ah yes, in this photo we see the shepherds worshipping    Jesus. They ran as fast as they could to get there…to be   the first people in history to lay their eyes on Jesus.

Narrator slows: Later, of course, others would see Jesus as well…(“ding!”)

Narrator: The Bible tells us that there were three wise men, or  Kings, that came from the East to see Jesus. They had seen a special star pointing to where he was and this led them to Jesus.

Narrator slows: They brought him special, meaningful gifts. (“ding”)

Narrator:                                    But for now …

…It was just the shepherds and Mary and Joseph in the stable.

STATION 1 – GETTING TO KNOW YOU (10 minutes)

Have 2 children stand at the front and have a conversation about what they want to be when they grow up.

Then have 2 more at the front and have a conversation about what they are going to do after church.

Then 2 more about people they don’t get to see often and miss  (ie. grandparents or friends who have moved away)

TEACHER:    We had time to talk to friends about what we want to be when we grow

up and what we are going to do after church and about family and friends we miss, today we are going to learn how to talk to God about our dreams wants and things that make us sad.

STATION 2 – THE BIBLE (5-7 minutes)

TEACHER:            We were reading in the Book of ACTS last week and we are going to continue reading there today.  The book of ACTS tells us what Jesus wants us to do.  Today we are going to learn that Jesus wants us to pray before everything we do.

READ:                        ACTS  1 : 12-26

TEACHER:            Did you notice in that verse how it said that all the friends were together and they prayed CONSTANTLY?  Constantly means “a lot!!!”

What do you think prayer is? Let kids give some ideas

TEACHER                Praying is what you did earlier; it is having a conversation but with

God instead of your friends.

You can’t see him but you can talk to him anytime you want to.  Your friends you can only talk to when you see them or call them on the phone but God is always right there waiting for us to talk to Him.


STATION 3  – ACTIVITY (10 minutes)

I will supply a big picture of a clock on the wall

TEACHER:            Ask the kids what things they can pray for  (ie. having a good day, help studying for a spelling test or being angry because a friend hurt them.)

Write these on a piece of paper and tape it to different times  on the clock to show the kids they can pray anytime of the day and God will listen.

STATION 4 – SKIT  (5 minutes)

TEACHER:            Now we are going to see a little drama about prayer

Teacher, have 3 volunteers  WHO CAN READ help you. If you are short of readers, then have the adults do the skit.

STATION 6

TEACHER : God asks us to pray before everything we do this includes eating.  We sometimes call it grace but it is praying and thanking God for the food He has provided.  So before we have a snack we need to thank God for this food.

–            then bless the food before offering the kids a bag of cheerios

Be My Witness: Telling the story of Jesus (Grades K-3) (Sunday School Lessons For Children)

STATION 1 – Opener (10 minutes)

  • Have two children stand at the front and introduce them.
  • Tell the other children to look at them for about 10 seconds.
  • Then send the children to a place where they won’t be seen
  • Have the other children tell you as many things about them as they can; you write them down.
  • You can ask them questions to prompt them (“Where they wearing a jacket?” “Did they have anything in their hands?” “What color were their shoes?”)
  • Then bring the other children back and see how well you did, see what you missed

Teacher:  We had a lot of words to talk about these two people. Now, if you left this room and someone said, “Tell me about (child’s name”) you could talk about them because you have looked at them closely.  Today we are going to hear how Jesus asked his friends to talk about him.

STATION 2 – The Bible (5-7 minutes)

Move children to the couches and stools and you sit in front on the chair

Teacher:             There is a book in the Bible called ACTS. Can you say that with me?  It is in this half of the Bible. The book of ACTS talks about what happened AFTER Jesus died, and AFTER he rose again…it talks about what Jesus said just before he went to heaven and the instructions he gave to his followers. The book of ACTS talks about how the first church was started.

Read:                        Acts 1:1-8 (or have someone in grade 3 read it)

Teacher:             What do you think that word “witness” means? (Let the kids give some ideas)

Teacher:            Being a witness is exactly what you did a minute ago when you talked about what those two kids looked like and what they are wearing.  If you knew them, you would also talk about the things they like and don’t like, and how much fun they are, and where they live, and what they are good at.  That is called being a “Witness.” That is what Jesus asked us to do. Talk about Him to other people. Tell other people what he Is like, what he is good at, why he is such a good friend, how much he loves everyone…describe him to others!

STATION 3 – Activity (10 minutes)

  • For this activity we have pieces, like big puzzle pieces, of Jesus. On the back is a description of what Jesus is like. For example, one piece will say, “Forgiving” and a reader can read it out to the group and then they can tape it up on the larger piece of paper that has the outline of Jesus.

Teacher:            So, if we are going to describe Jesus to other people, we need some words to do so. I am going to  divide you up into 7 groups and I need one person who can read in the group to read what is on the back these papers. Then we are going to talk about Jesus and put his picture together here like a puzzle.

STATION 4 – DVD (12 minutes)

Teacher:             I am going to show you a few stories about Jesus that comes from the Bible. I want you to watch these, and then after the little movie is done, I will ask, what have you learned, what would you say about Jesus to other people

Lead a discussion about what this video tells us about Jesus. What would you tell other people about him after knowing these things about him?

STATION 5 – Drama Sketch (10 minutes)

Teacher:            There are so many people who need to hear about how wonderful Jesus is. When we share the good news about Jesus, this is called being a witness. He can help us, and He can help others.

Choose 2 older kids who can read and have them “Act out” this little sketch

Person 1:            I am feeling very worried.

Person 2:            Why are you worried?

Person 1:            I have to give a speech in front of my class and I am nervous about it. I don’t want to do it.

Person 2:            You can do it!

Person 1:            I don’t know if I can. My stomach even hurts because I am so nervous.

Person 2:            Well….I will pray for you that you won’t be nervous.

Person 1:            Pray? How will that help?

Person 2:            Well, Jesus says that we can tell Him anything, and that we don’t need to worry about anything. He says we can pray to Him and he will help us.

Person 1:            Really? I have never prayed about anything before. I don’t even know anything about God.

Person 2:            That’s OK, I will pray for you.  If you want to know more about Jesus, we can talk about it sometime. Or maybe you can come with me to SunLand sometime.

Person 1:            OK. Well thanks, I guess. That makes me feel better that you care and its nice that you are going to pray for me. Thanks.

Teacher:            Sometimes we just need to do something kind for someone else, or say something kind, or…like this person, pray for someone.  That is all being a witness for Jesus.

STATION 6 – Smaller Groups (10 minutes)

Each small group will have a bag of Honeycombs.

Leader:             The Bible says that our kind words are sweet to other people, sweet like Honeycomb.  So, I have these honeycombs and we are going to think of kind words we can say to others. Jesus says when we use kind words, and do kind things for others, that is being a witness for Him.

What are kind things we could say or do when…

1. Someone is moving away and they are sad about it

2. Someone is feeling lonely because they don’t have very many friends

3. Someone is afraid

4. Someone is sick and can’t go out, maybe they are even in the hospital

5. Someone is sitting all by themselves at school

The Bridge For Kids

1.   We matter to God.  He made us and He has always loved us and wanted to share his love with us in a very close friendship. In the beginning when God first made the world we did have a close friendship and our hearts were clean and right. (Point out: Who is God and who the people are in the picture. Point out how God is sharing His perfect love with all the people. Point out how God’s heart is clean and how people’s hearts were clean too)

2.But people disobeyed God and threw away His love and did whatever they wanted no matter what God said. They did all kinds of bad things – lying, cheating, gossiping, murder; they were unkind to other people and selfish and cruel – all of these things are called sin. Our sin is ugly and it sticks to us and makes our hearts unclean. (Point out: how people are no longer happy and how God is disappointed. Point out how people threw away God’s love. Point out how there are all kinds of sins sticking to people. Point out how God’s heart is still perfect, but now people’s hearts are darkened by sin)

3.  Our sin got in between and pushed God away. Our sin now meant that God is here and we are there and we can’t be together…ever. (Point out: how sin pushed God away and created a big gap between us and God. Sin separates us from God)

4.  People often think they can fix this problem by themselves. (Point out: the man saying “I can fix this”)

5.  So they try to be really, really good. But you know what…that doesn’t fix it. (Point out: how the people are smiling nicely and trying to be really good. Then point out how even doing really good things doesn’t get rid of our sin problem)

6.  People think “If I go to church” then my sins will all be fixed up. But that doesn’t work. (Point out: the church building over the people and explain how even going to church doesn’t fix our sin problem)

7.  None of us can DO THINGS to find our way back to God, we can’t earn forgiveness at all.

There is only one way for us to be with God in a close friendship. Someone has to pay for our sin; someone needs to forgive us. (Point out: how sin is still a really big problem and how God is saying that He is the only one who can fix it)

8.  Jesus is the only one who could pay for our sin. Jesus is perfect; He never ever sinned so He was the only one who could take all the sin that was stuck to us, the ugliness of all the sin in the world to the cross. Jesus took all those sins in his hands and when he was nailed to the cross and those sins were nailed there too.  His blood washed those sins away.

Jesus died for us and so all the ugliness of our sin died too. And when Jesus came alive on Easter Sunday…He showed us that we could have new life and clean hearts too.  Jesus gives us a new hearts, we only need to believe in Him.(Point out: how Jesus took our sins upon himself and “squashed” sin. The sins that were stuck on people are now nailed to the cross. Point out that when our sins were taken off of us, our hearts became clean again. Point out how the Cross is like a bridge that we can cross over to do life with God in our lives)

9. When you receive the gift of new life from Jesus…then his cross becomes like a Bridge that we walk across and now we can be close to God because we have new hearts.  That doesn’t mean we don’t ever sin – sometimes we do – but now we know that we can ask for forgiveness and Jesus is always washing us clean and giving us a new heart.

When we say thank you to Jesus for dying for our sins and coming alive again to give us new life; when we decide to follow Him, we move from here….to here…and God lives in our hearts and and is always with us and will always lead us. (Point out: when we believe in Jesus and what He did for us on the cross, that allows us to use His cross as a bridge so that we can live with God leading us. Now we are able to be with God, be guided by Him, understand His love and share His love with others)

The Lord’s Supper Lesson For Children (K and up)

Introducing the big idea (8 Minutes – keep it moving so kids stay tuned in)

Needed for this introduction: Blender, tomato sauce, salami, cheese, flour, oregano, milk, yeast

“Today I thought we would start out the morning by making a snack. I was thinking pizza, because pretty much everyone likes pizza…so I have this blender and I have all these ingredients. So I am thinking…just throw all this in the blender and it should come out OK. Can I get a volunteer to help me with this…”

Get a volunteer to come up and help throw everything into the blender (you might get protests, “that isn’t going to work!” and such…but just act like you believe that something great is going to come out of the blender)

In the end you just have a gross, goopy mess.

Take some time to discuss what happened by asking questions…

“Why didn’t this work?”

“What was missing here?”

The Point:

“You can’t just throw ingredients together and hope something amazing is going to happen, can you? Similarly, if you want to build a car, you can’t just heap together bolts and screws and leather and fibreglass and engine parts and window panes and seatbelts…put all the parts in a pile…turn around and wait for five minutes and hope when you turn back again you will have a Ferrari, can you? What is required to build a Ferrari.

You know what the funny thing is? The world has gotten really mixed up about how things are made. As ridiculous as trying to make this pizza was, and as silly as thinking a car will invent itself, a lot of people in the world think that people just sort of…happened…by accident…but I want you to know, you are no accident. Today we are going to read the Bible and hear what God has to say about you and how you were made.”

God’s Word (4 minutes)

“The Bible is like a photo-album. You know how you have pictures of yourself in Kindergarten and then Grade 1 and then there are all these “here’s you in the Christmas Play” and “here’s you riding a bike” and “here’s you with your Uncle John” and “here’s you at summer camp” – all these pictures tell the story of your life.

Well, the Bible tells God’s story. It tells us what He did, and how He thinks, and it shows us the right way to live.

This big book, is divided up into smaller books: 66 of them. And the very first book is….can anyone tell me?

Genesis. The word “genesis” means the “origin, or beginning of something.”

Genesis tells us about the beginning of the world and how everything was CREATED – that is…it was MADE….it didn’t just happen by accident.

When God wants something to be MADE…he just says it and it happens.

He made light—and…What do you think he called the light? (day)

He made sure there was darkness…and he called the darkness… (night)

Then he made the sky.

He moved the waters back so that land appeared…

He made the waters and these he called seas.

He grew plants, flowers, and trees with seeds to reproduce themselves…

He created the sun, the moon and the stars—so that there would be days and different seasons

He filled the seas with fish, the sky with birds, and the earth with all kinds of wild animals!

All of this creating was very important to God! And he was very happy with it. In fact, after he created all these

things, he looked at them and said, “This is good!”

After he had prepared the earth, God said, “Let us make humans in our image, to be like us. They will be in charge of the earth and the plants and the animals that live on it.” So God formed man from the dust of the ground. Then he breathed his own breath into him and he became alive. This man would be called Adam.

God placed Adam in a beautiful garden, a place where Adam had everything he needed to live the best kind of

life. God planted all kinds of trees in the garden that produced delicious fruit so humans would always have lots to eat. God gave Adam the responsibility to take care of this garden and all of his creatures. God even brought all of the animals to Adam so he could give them names!

Then God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper for him.” So God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. While Adam was asleep, God took a rib out of Adam and made the rib into a woman. Adam later called this woman Eve, which means “Giver of Life”.

Cross-word Contest (10 Minutes)

The point of this is to get kids into the Bible as well as to reinforce the lesson. Divide the kids into 3 groups, make sure they have enough Bibles. Show them how to look things up in the Bible (for example, if it says Genesis 1:2…show them how to find Genesis and that the 1 refers to the chapter…show them what a chapter looks like and after the colon is the verse…show them how to find a verse). Have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize.

Transition (1 Minute)

Everything God made, He made on purpose. God is an artist and the world is full of His amazing artwork. How can we look at anything God created and think it could have happened by accident?

It’s like this…I am going to need some help with this….(pick 5 kids to help with this skit…script will be printed out for them to read and act out):

Skit: Who Made It? (10 Minutes)

Characters: Narrator, Walker, Student 1, Student 2, Student 3

Prop: Tape recorder that can play music, a few goofy props (hat, glasses, walking stick…that idea)

Narrator:             A man was walking in the woods one day. He looked up at the tall trees. He looked down at the beautiful flowers. He walked along the path and smelled the fresh country air.

As he was walking, he suddenly spotted something.

It was square. It was black and yellow.

He picked it up and looked at it. And then he said:

Walker:            I wonder what this is?  It looks different from everything else in the woods. It doesn’t seem to be a plant or an animal…I wonder what this is.

Narrator:            Just then, another person who was out for a walk came along and saw the man looking at the shiny square thing

Student 1:            What is that?

Walker:            I don’t know. What do you think it is?

Student 1:            I haven’t seen it before but I think that is a rock that has now magically changed itself into a square thing.

Walker:            Really? It changed all by itself?

Student 1:            Yes. I think if a rock sits long enough, it may decide all by itself to become a thing like this.

Walker:            But it has these buttons and if I press one…look what happens.

Student 1:            I am not surprised at all. I think rocks are very smart and could just decide to play music.

Walker:            I will have to think about that.

Student 1 walks away

Narrator:            Soon another person came along and saw the man looking at the square thing that played music.

Student 2:            What’s that?

Walker:            I don’t know. I am trying to figure it out. Have you ever seen something like this in the woods before?

Student 2:            No, but I am pretty sure I know what happened here. I think that a little twig and a piece of grass and some pebbles and some rain and some dust and some crickets all landed in one spot, on one day, and the sun was shining just at that moment and the wind was blowing and all those parts joined together and you now have this.

Walker:            That sounds a little crazy.

Student 2:            Well, I am pretty sure that is how it happened.

Walker:            Hmmmm.

Student 2 walks away.

Narrator:            Soon another person came walking by.

Student 3:            Oh, what is that you have there?

Walker:            I don’t know, it was on the ground and it looks different from everything else.

Student 3:            Well…I don’t know what it is, but someone must have made it.

Walker:            Made it?

Student 3:            Yes, isn’t that obvious? It is made out of plastic, that would come from a factory where people make plastic. And there are screws and gears and moving parts. A smart person invented this and used tools to put this together. And there are words on it as well, and only a person uses words, so a person must have named this and put the name right on it. Oh look, it says, tape recorder – that is what it is, a tape recorder.

Walker:            So this was made by a smart person and it is a tape recorders.

Student 3:            Exactly.

Teacher:            Take a look at the person next to you. As goofy as they may be…here are some amazing facts about the person next to you:

  • Did you know that before I finish this sentence 10 million cells in their body will die and be replaced…now.
  • Did you know that the acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve zinc?
  • Your lungs contain 300 million tiny blood vessels so that if they were laid out end to end they would stretch 2400 km
  • Each one of your finger and toenails take 6 months to grow from base to tip
  • The focusing muscles of the eye move around 100,000 times a day. To give your leg muscles the same workout you would need to walk 80 km a day!
  • We have approximately 9,000 taste buds on our tongues
  • There are 54 bones in your hand
  • The human brain has about 100 billion neurons (neurons are cells in your brain that are needed to pass on information – and you have 100 billion of them…what if you only had 10 billion…what wouldn’t you be able to think? God knew you needed 100 billion and gave them to you!)

You are an amazing creation and you were MADE by God, and you were MADE because God thinks you are valuable and He loves you! You are on this planet because He wants you to be and He has a plan for your life.

Bible Verse – Every Other Word (5 Minutes)

Pair the kids off or put them in groups and give them 5 minutes to memorize the verse below by having them memorize it as follows (just to make it more fun)

Verse: “We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in God’s love. God is love.” 1 John 4:16

Person 1: We

Person 2: know

Person 1: how

Person 2: much

Person 1: God

Person 2: loves

Etc.

Then have them “perform it”. Make sure they get the “1 John 4:16” as well.

This will be the same verse we are doing all of September.

Prayer

Close in prayer. Reinforce the lesson in prayer. See if there would be a student who would be willing to also pray…Close off by having the kids repeat this line

“Thanks God for making me”

So that their voice is heard in prayer as well.
