Ten Little Things

1. Free Playtime

Try and encourage the kids to play together (play time, but as a group around 1 activity. It could be playdough or blocks or puzzles or whatever, but to have the children start together with something)

2. Opening activity (Singing) (5 minutes)

Start off by singing the “more we get together”

“The more we get together, together, together”  (gather kids into a circle, and hold hand swinging to the motion of the song)

“The more we get together, the happier we’ll be” (make a silly happy face)

Cause your friends are my friends and my friends are your friends” (point to yourself and then kids around you)

”the more we get together the happier we’ll be”. (make a silly face)

(Sing a few times)

3. Read (5 minutes)

Bible Story : The Good Samaritan

Read from the “Children’s Favourite Bible stories” pg. 305

4. Watch (5 minutes)

Show Good Samaritan DVD. There are a lot of ideas on YouTube

Here is a suggestion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOo-Q980h7M&feature=related

5. Game (5 minutes)

Being a good friend and neighbour game.

God wants us to be a good friend and neighbour to everyone. A neighbour is everyone around you both far and wide. This means being nice to those around us. We are going to play a fun game where you tell me if I am saying something that is nice to do to our friends or not nice.  Sit down and only jump up  if I say something that is nice.  (Have children sit down in a group and encourage them to jump up when something that is said is nice)

Examples:  giving our friends a hug! (nice), not sharing our toys (not nice), sharing our toys (nice), not listening to our parents (not nice), cleaning up our toys (nice), inviting a new boy or girl to come play with us (nice), etc…….

6. Bible Memory verse (5 minutes)

In the bible we learn that God loves us and that he wants us to love one another. God wants us to be nice and to share with everybody. The bible says in Micah 6:8 “Jesus asks me to be fair.”  Let see if we can remember this verse! Let practice it together.  (do actions to verse a few times with kids)

Jesus (point to the sky),

asks (make a motion with your hand from mouth),

me  (point to self)

to (hold up two fingers),

be (make wings with your arms and buzz like a bee),

fair (hold to hand up, palms faceing the sky and tilt back and fourth like a scale)

7. Snack (5 minutes)

Ask two of the kids if they want to help hand out the snack. Just like the good Samaritan served his neighbour.

Pray over snack  (thank-you god for this food and our friends)

8. Giving a neighbour hug craft (5-8 minutes)

Have hand shape papers pre-cut out and pre-glued to stripe of paper folded tightly. Get kids to glues these to big cut our HUG hearts. Kids can decorate hearts with crayons.

Encourage kids to give there hug to a neighbour

9. Prayer

-Thank you God that we can learn about him today.

-Thank-you for our friends and those around us

-Thank-you for loving us.

10. Colouring page of the Good Samaritan (5 minutes)

Psalm 86:5

Heavenly Father’s Day

(The Prodigal Son)

Prepared by Vicki Waddell

Lesson adapted from: http://www.daniellesplace.com/html/rrsampleprimaryprodigal.html

Attention Grabber – about 10 minutes

Set up a small obstacle course with chairs. Pair the kids up. One child puts on a blindfold, while his partner’s job is to get him “home” by giving him directions to get through the obstacle course. If the partner is unsuccessful, he will need to take his blind partner and lead him through. Once all have gone through, switch roles, and maybe the course a little.

Tell the kids that today we are learning about a son who made some poor choices in his life and got himself into trouble. Life got really difficult for him and he finally returned home to his father, who welcomed him.

Read Luke 15:11-31 – less than 10 minutes

Watch DVD of Story, then discuss – about 10 minutes

For Video idea see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXfSrJV-BrY&feature=related

Spend a few minutes discussing the story with the kids. Make sure they understand that this story is a representation of God’s unconditional love for us.

The father in this story was a great father wasn’t he? He was so excited to see his son. He had been waiting and praying a long time for his safe return. He had been worried and was constantly watching and waiting for the moment he would appear over the horizon.

The young man’s father didn’t yell at him, or reject him. He knew that his son had learned his lesson and was sorry for what he had done. So he prepared a big party and invited everyone he knew to celebrate the return of his son. He celebrated as if his son had been dead and had now come back to life.

We don’t always get this response from our own fathers when we make mistakes, do we? Sometimes they yell at us and tell us that we didn’t make a very good choice or weren’t being very smart. Sometimes they give us a lecture about what we should have done. Sometimes we even get punished. But our fathers don’t do these things because they want to hurt us, they do them because they want the best for us. They punish us because they love us and want us to do the right thing.

When Jesus was telling this story, he wasn’t talking about our fathers here on earth, he was talking about our Father in Heaven. He was trying to show us how God loves us unconditionally. He loves us no matter what we do. He is sad when we do wrong and turn away from him, but he never rejects us and anxiously waits for our return. David said it perfectly when he wrote in Psalms 86:5, “You are kind and forgiving, O Lord, abounding (overflowing) in love to all who call you.

Memory Verse – 10 minutes

Play “Feed the Pigs” memorization game.

See idea at: http://www.daniellesplace.com/html/rrsampleprimaryprodigal.html

Psalms 86:5: “You are kind and forgiving, O Lord, abounding (overflowing) in love to all who call you. “

Prayer and Snack

“Father, we thank you for your loving kindness. We thank you that we can come to you whenever we have a problem and that you will always be there for us. We know that you are quick to forgive us when we mess up and will always welcome us back when we return to you.”

“I pray this blessing over each one of you.

Each of you is precious in God’s sight.

God sees you every minute of every day, he knows how you feel and what you are thinking, and he loves you.

I pray that you will come to know and love and trust Jesus with all your heart for all your days.

May the Lord bless you and protect you.

May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.

May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.

Amen.”

Proverbs 23:25 So give your parents joy!

And

Luke 17

Expressing gratitude to our parents

Prepared by: Teresa Klassen

1.         How Long Of A List? (8 minutes)

* Teachers, we need to treat this with sensitivity, because not every child has a relationship with his/her mom – or even their parents for that matter. So I have tried to word this in a way that is inclusive to all children.

Teacher: How old are you? (let kids call out their ages or pick a few to tell you how old they are). When you are 4 or 5 or 6 it means you need someone to take care of you right? You can do a lot of things for yourself, but you can’t do everything. That means that you need an adult or two to help you.  For a lot of you, that means you have a mom and dad who help you; some of you might be living with an Aunt or Uncle or Grandma or Grandpa who help you. Whoever those people are, they are working hard to help you as you grow up.

Have you ever thought about all the things they do to make your life awesome? I’ll bet it is a pretty long list. Let’s see how long of a list we can make of all the things they do for you!

Have the kids tell you all the things their parents/caregivers do for them, write them in big words on the paper provided and see how long you can make the list – to give them a visual of how fortunate they are.

Wow! That is a long list.  When someone does all these things for us, it makes us pretty happy doesn’t it?  But I wonder, can we do something back? Can you do something at your age – age 4 or 5 or 6 – to bring your mom or dad or aunt or Grandma joy?

The Bible says in the book of Proverbs, “So give your parents joy!”  I wonder how we can do that?

Well, one of the ways we can do that is by being very thankful. (Teacher, if you have kids you can also personalize this by saying, “I know for me, as a mom/dad, when my kids say ‘thank-you’ to me, it gives me a lot of joy.”)

2.         A Story About Being Thankful (5 minutes)

Teacher: I want to tell you a story from the Bible about 10 people who asked Jesus for something…

Read this story from the Bible provided — Luke 17:11-19

Questions: Jesus really did care for those men who were sick. How do you think it made him feel when 9 of them did not say thank you?

How do you think it made him feel when one did come back and say thank you?

When we show thanks to God for the good things He has done for us, it brings Him so much joy.

In the same way, when we say thank you to the people who are helping us as we grow up – that brings them lots of joy too!!

3.         Saying “Thank you” rocks! (Activity) (gratitude fills us up again) (8 minutes)

Teacher: See these rocks in here, they all have hearts on them.  On the outside of this bucket is a big heart. Let’s pretend that this heart is your mom’s heart…or if you are being raised by your auntie or Grandma, it is their heart.

Every time she does something for you, she gives you a little bit of herself.

So, thinking back to the list we just made of things she does for us during the day, why don’t you name something and then take a rock.

As kids name things….have them take a rock until the bucket is empty.  If you need some addition ideas, see the list below.

When she…

  1. 1. Gives you a hug, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  2. 2. Cooks you a meal, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  3. 3. Washes your clothes, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  4. 4. Tucks you in at night, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  5. 5. Takes care of you when you are sick, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  6. 6. Makes a meal for you, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  7. 7. Reads you a story, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  8. 8. Drives you to your friend’s house, she is giving you a bit of her heart
  9. 9. Throws you a birthday party, she is giving you a bit of her heart

10. Helps you clean your room, she is giving you a bit of her heart

11. Cleans up after you, she is giving you a bit of her heart

12. Listens to you tell a story, she is giving you a bit of her heart

13. Helps you with your school work, she is giving you a bit of her heart

14. Gives you ideas, she is giving you a bit of her heart

15. Fixes something of yours that is broken, she is giving you a bit of her heart

16. Plays a game with you, she is giving you a bit of her heart

17. Packs you a lunch, she is giving you a bit of her heart

18. Gives you a surprise gift, she is giving you a bit of her heart

19. Rubs your back, she is giving you a bit of her heart

20. Gives up doing something she’d like to do, so that you can have fun instead, she is giving you a bit of her heart

Now look….the bucket is empty isn’t it?

Sometimes when you give a lot to others, your heart can begin to feel a little bit like it needs filling up again.

One of the ways we can fill our special moms or aunties or Grandma’s hearts up with love and joy again is just by being really thankful for everything she does.  So now, I want you to come and put these rocks back in the bucket and as you do, say “thank you” to remind you that you should be saying this to her lots, and lots and lots.

Have the children do this.

When you go home today, if you want to take a rock home to remind you to say thanks to your moms/aunties/Grandma’s you can…and if they ask you what the rock is for, you can tell them it is to remind you to say thank you.

4.         I Want To Say Thank You (The Thank You cards) (15ish minutes)

Materials needed:

Items to make some thank you cards.  Have the kids write something on the inside. Then put them in a gift bag with some chocolates for their mom, tie the top with ribbon.

Teacher: Remember, the verse in proverbs says that children should give their parents joy. Today is a good day to so thank you to your parents and especially to your mom because it is Mother’s Day today. Not everyone has a mom living at home, so maybe a special lady in your life is an Auntie or a Grandma or a good friend who loves you so much. You can say thank you to them!

Today is a day to be thankful for that special lady in your life who is helping you to grow up in a good way.

I have a bunch of things you can use to decorate the front of the card. And then you can write something personal inside and put it in a gift bag with some chocolates for her.

Give the children time to make their cards and bags.

5.         Bible verse for this month

The Bible says that you as children should bring your parents joy!  We want to listen to the Bible’s instructions! Let’s see if you can remember the verse we learned last week. You can use these sheets on the wall to help remind you (they have cue cards on the wall…you will need to go over them a few times first)

Psalm 119:33: “Teach me, O Lord, to follow your instructions and I will keep them!”

6.         Time at the end – Pictionary

If you have time at the end, play pictionary with the kids.  You will have a list of cards of things parents do for us, things we can express thanks for.

7.         Prayer

Take the time to pray with the children and over them.

Clean Up!

Since our building is used for many different things, we need to make sure we clean up after ourselves. You can definitely have the kids help you do this near the end of the morning!!

  • Please use the BAG provided to put all the left-over items into it, and then you can leave your bag in the classroom.
  • Please pick up all the garbage and put it in the trash
  • If there are chairs or stools, please fold or stack them and put them away
  • Please turn the heat down (applicable for youth room and Gazebo) to 10 degrees
  • Please make sure any TVs/DVDs/Projectors are powered off
  • Please make sure all toys are put away

Thank you so very much!

We have some little books (show them the book). On the front it says “To________” and there is where you can print mom or another name. And then the title says “Thank You for…”

Then we have all these little pages you can glue into your book. You pick the ones you are most thankful for. You won’t be able to pick all the pictures, there are more pictures than pages. So pick the ones that show things that are done for you that you are most thankful for.

Then on the back page it says, “I wanted to bring you some joy today by saying thank you for all you do for me!” you can write your name on the line, or we can help you if you need it.

Give the children time to make their little books and then have them put them in the gift bags and tie with the ribbon.

6.         Prayer and Free-Time

Take the time to pray with the children and over them.

If the weather is nice, let them enjoy the yard (please make sure you have someone supervising) but make sure they clean up before they leave the yard. If children are inside as well you will need someone inside and outside.
